Dragon 66, an interesting look into the workings of TSR in late 1982
Dragon Magazine Jim Holloway TSR
October 1982 saw the release of Dragon Vol. VII, No. 5, Issue #66 with Editor-in-Chief Kim Mohan at the helm. It’s another strong issue from the ‘Below 100’ club, with great content for D&D [like Gary saying gun powder doesn’t work in AD&D], a counterargument piece by authors John Sapienza & Bruce Murphy where they debate the use of weapon restrictions by class, a look at Elfquest if the characters were from D&D, Gary’s take on the Jann, Dao, and Marid. New illusionist spells [later put into Unearthed Arcana], useful ways to employ Phantasmal Force, Speaking Thieves’ Cant, and a...
The art of The Cleansing War of Garik Blackhand for Gamma World 2nd Edition
David LaForce Gamma World Jeff Easley Jim Holloway TSR
Today I’m going to give a little ‘love’ to Gamma World 2nd Edition. Although you’d be hard pressed to find a player out there to calls 2nd Edition their favorite iteration of the game, it still has some cool work done for it so I’ll take a look at the art of The Cleansing War of Garik Blackhand [which BTW wins the TSR award for longest title of a product]This is a strange little bit of work as there are two credited artists in it, Jim Holloway and David ‘Deisel’ LaForce. As the first printing was in 1983, this seems...
D20 Past, a perfect way to expand your RPG world into the days of future... well, past
D20 Modern Wizards of the Coast
While at GenCon a few years back I picked up a copy of D20 Modern’s D20 Past supplement for a $1.00. Yep, a solid buck and this book was mine. Honestly, I wasn’t sure if I’d ever use it, but I had to at least add it to my D20 Modern collection. Luckily, I was playing a small campaign in my Gun Kingdoms setting and got to employ one of the prestige classes from this book with a player. It worked well, and although we’ve since switched to the much less time consuming [on my end at least] Savage Worlds...
Dragon #91: How they did everything right, and then some!
Dean Morrissey Dragon Magazine Jeff Butler Roger Raupp
In November 1984, Dragon Magazine #91 hit the shelves. To me, it never really seemed to jump out, probably because Dean Morrissey never really captured my attention like many of his contemporaries, probably because my mind is geared toward fantasy looking more unreal.Looking back on the issue now, I find that incredibly sad as Issue #91 is a masterpiece. It is absolutely filled with incredible content from Gygax showing us a new demon [the goristro], to Ed Greenwood’s ‘Nine Hells revisited’, which is an astounding look at devils and where they live.Ares gives us an incredible Star Frontiers Knight Hawks...
B9 Castle Caldwell and the oddity of a TSR comedy
AD&D Modules clyde caldwell TSR
The TSR module B9, released in 1985 proves that during the final days of Gygax’s reign over TSR that there was still a sense of humor around. That is something important to understand, that while Gary himself could be a tough DM, he was always having a joke.So comes this rather forgettable module by Harry W. Nuckols [yeah, I’m not thinking that’s real], and entitled Castle Caldwell and Beyond [which of course is a reference to cover artist Clyde Caldwell]. In all, it is a small series of adventures for character levels 1-3, five to be exact, and all look...
