MERP: The Goblin – Gate and Eagle’s Eyrie, a setting for full Tolkien goodness
Iron Crown Enterprises product #8070, The Goblin – Gate and Eagle’s Eyrie was one of those that I waited a great deal of time to lay my hands on. You see, as I.C.E. rolled out the various supplements for Middle-Earth Role-Playing the players and GM’s alike got to pick up statistics for the various items and heroes from Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. So, it was with bated breath that I finally got a copy of this little module way back in 1985 because it was the first place you could get stats on The One Ring. You see, The...
Etherscope: A game with artwork as drab as the setting
Now I know this game was nominated for ‘Best D20 Game’, but it can’t be because of the artwork. Released from Goodman Games in 2006, and I say released because Joseph Goodman seems to have had nothing to do with it other than putting it to press, this is a bare bones type of core book release when it comes to artwork. That typically means you are looking to save money, and I can’t fault that entirely, but there is also something to be said for looking at a book and being a bit overwhelmed by pages and pages of...
N1: Against the Cult of the Reptile God… yes please!
AD&D Modules Douglas Niles Harry Quinn Jim Holloway Steven Sullivan Tim Truman TSR
I mean seriously, of all the TSR adventures from the 1980s, does any have a title better than Against the Cult of the Reptile God? I really think author Douglas Niles must have stolen this title from a lost Robert E. Howard Conan manuscript because it is really that cool. Niles, a personal favorite TSR author, spins a tale of the ‘dying’ village of Orlane located near Greyhawk’s Gran March. Once thriving, now only a maze of locked doors and frightened faces, Orlane needs a band of brave adventurers to help free it from whatever evil plagues the settlement. Well,...
Battletech: The Mercenary's Handbook 1st Edition, a walk on the awesome side.
Battletech Dietrick FASA Jeff Laubenstein Jim Holloway
Ok, just for anyone who doesn’t know, I love the art of Jeff Laubenstein, so any review I do with his artwork is going to be skewed in the direction of the positive. Having established, of the pre-1990 FASA Battletech supplements, this has to be one of the finest out there. I once ran a full mercenary company in the game and this book was an incredibly valuable resource, having information so detailed that there is even a contract that can be copied and signed for each mission your crew intends to take on. In fact, using this book, I...
Star Frontiers: Making the Dramune Run one more time
Clyde Caldwell Keith Parkinson Star Frontiers TSR
Today I’m going to take a look at one of my favorite games, Star Frontiers. The oddity of that claim is that I’ve really only played Star Frontiers once, for a single two month campaign back in 1988. Therefore, I can only see Star Frontiers as appearing so high on my list of favorite games for one reason, the artwork. The second boxed set, Knight Hawks, brought forth a series of space adventure modules that continued to feature great artwork and one of the best would have to be the 1984 release of SFKH1 Dramune Run. Written by another of...
